A mother, previously troubled by panic attacks and recurrent chest infections, initially attributed her symptoms to anxiety. However, it was later revealed that she had a rare genetic condition known as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency affecting both her lungs and liver.

Heather Bluer, a 45-year-old solicitor from Bolton, experienced unusual panic attack-like symptoms during the Covid-19 pandemic. Subsequent medical investigations unveiled her critical oxygen deficiency, prompting an emergency hospitalization due to dangerously low oxygen saturation levels.

Following a series of tests, it was determined that Heather urgently needed a heart and double lung transplant. Despite facing a challenging health deterioration, she had to wait longer than usual to be placed on the transplant list. Her condition worsened over the next two years, rendering her bedridden and reliant on constant care.

Eventually, on June 19, 2024, Heather received a life-saving call informing her that a donor had become available. Rushed to Wythenshawe Hospital, she underwent a heart and lung transplant surgery at the renowned Manchester Heart and Lung Transplant Centre.

Heather’s post-transplant journey marked a significant shift in her perspective, emphasizing the ongoing treatment and management required for her new organs. While acknowledging the restrictions and side effects accompanying her medication regimen, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness her children grow and embrace newfound milestones.
