Renowned disease control expert Professor Tim Spector shared his personal strategies for combating and preventing colds. As a prominent figure in the UK’s fight against Covid-19, Professor Spector, known for his work at ZOE health company and as a professor at King’s College London, revealed his tried-and-tested methods to reduce the impact of colds.

After experimenting with various approaches, including cutting out dairy and unconventional remedies like raw garlic and red wine, which led to an undesirable outcome, Professor Spector found a more effective solution. At the onset of a cold, he relies on a barrier nasal spray to prevent the virus from multiplying in the throat. This preventative measure, using products like Vicks First Defence or concentrated saline sprays, has proven successful in stopping cold symptoms from progressing.

Contrary to popular belief, Professor Spector dismisses the effectiveness of vitamin C supplements for cold prevention and instead advocates for a diet rich in vitamin C from natural sources like kiwis, peppers, and broccoli. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of consuming fermented foods such as kimchi, kefir, and miso, along with other probiotic-rich options like cheese and sourdough bread, to boost immunity and combat cold symptoms.

To further enhance his cold-fighting regimen, Professor Spector incorporates a fermented lemon and ginger puree into his daily routine. In cases where a cold persists and leads to sinusitis, he recommends nasal rinses using a saline solution to alleviate symptoms and clear sinuses. Following these steps, he advises two days of rest, ample fluid intake, and a focus on self-care to expedite recovery and minimize the impact of the illness.
