Trump Downplays Saudi Prince’s Role in Khashoggi Murder

President Donald Trump has come under scrutiny for his defense of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who has been implicated in the brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Despite US intelligence findings linking Salman to the killing, Trump downplayed the accusations, calling Khashoggi “controversial” and suggesting that the Crown Prince was unaware of the murder, stating, “things happen.”

Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, with reports indicating he was murdered and dismembered. Turkish officials uncovered evidence of the crime and tampering with the scene. The United Nations has condemned Saudi Arabia for the “premeditated extrajudicial execution” of Khashoggi.

During a White House event welcoming the Crown Prince, Trump faced questions about the murder from ABC News, to which he responded by criticizing the reporter and dismissing the issue as “fake news.” Despite international condemnation, Trump has consistently shown admiration for Saudi Arabia and its leadership.

In a separate incident, Salman addressed concerns from 9/11 victims’ families regarding his warm reception in the US, expressing sympathy for their pain. He acknowledged Khashoggi’s murder as a “huge mistake” and assured efforts to prevent such incidents in the future.
