“Russia Unveils Massive Nuclear Submarine with Poseidon Torpedoes”

New satellite images reveal the extensive size of Russia’s latest nuclear-powered submarine, equipped to launch formidable nuclear torpedoes. The Khabarovsk-class submarine, a new addition to Moscow’s nuclear arsenal, was recently spotted in its entirety in the latest satellite photos at the Sevmash shipyard workshop.

With a length of approximately 135-140 meters and a width of 13.5 meters, the Khabarovsk submarine is designed to deploy Russia’s advanced ‘Poseidon’ torpedoes, capable of generating destructive tsunamis that can devastate coastal cities. These torpedoes not only carry nuclear warheads but also possess an ‘intercontinental range’ capability.

This secretive project of the Russian Navy, described as a “nuclear-powered missile cruiser” by the Ministry of Defence, is primarily armed with Poseidon torpedoes, supplemented by land-attack and anti-ship cruise missiles. The submarine’s launch in Severodvinsk over the weekend marked a delayed debut, attributed to unexplained setbacks over five years.

Powered by a nuclear engine, the Khabarovsk submarine can descend to depths of around 500 meters and operate at sea for extended periods. Its construction costs, estimated to exceed £1 billion, remain shrouded in secrecy, underscoring Moscow’s cautious approach due to experimental design elements.

An additional submarine of the same class, the Ulyanovsk, is currently under construction, set to reinforce Russia’s Pacific Fleet capabilities. These submarines are essential for deploying the Poseidon system, designed to exert influence globally.

The Khabarovsk submarine is scheduled for sea trials before integration into Russia’s nuclear deterrence fleet. Meanwhile, the Poseidon system, also known as Kanyon by NATO, challenges conventional nuclear deterrence norms with its unique characteristics, as highlighted by arms control experts.

President Putin recently announced successful underwater testing of the Poseidon missile, emphasizing its superiority over existing intercontinental-range missiles. He positioned the Poseidon system as a strategic response to perceived threats, particularly in the context of international arms treaties.

Putin emphasized the unmatched speed and depth capabilities of the Poseidon system, signaling Russia’s technological advancements in unmanned underwater vehicles. With ongoing geopolitical tensions, Russia’s strategic investments in advanced naval assets like the Khabarovsk submarine underscore its commitment to maintaining a strong defense posture.
