Prince William and Gordon Brown have teamed up to raise awareness about homelessness and showcase ways to prevent it. The former Labour Prime Minister’s charity is collaborating with the Prince of Wales to supply homes with essential items like cookers, fridges, and washing machines.
Brown highlighted their partnership, which includes major UK retailers, aiming to combat homelessness by transforming houses into welcoming homes for struggling families. He praised Prince William for continuing the legacy of his mother, Princess Diana, who advocated for various important causes.
The joint initiative, named Homewards, led by Prince William, and Brown’s Multibank scheme, established in Fife in 2021, is focused on reducing homelessness through a five-year program. Multibank will furnish 250 homes in six regions, supported by companies like B&Q, Bosch Home Appliances, DFS Group, and IKEA.
The provision of basic furnishings such as fridges, cookers, and bedding is crucial in making houses feel like homes. Brown emphasized the importance of these items in ensuring that families in need have a comfortable living environment. The initiative also extends to providing toiletries and other essential household goods.
In a documentary last year, Prince William shared his personal connection to homelessness and his commitment to addressing the issue. He stressed the significance of everyone having access to a safe and stable home, regardless of their background. Brown commended Prince William for his dedication to highlighting societal issues and making a positive impact.
Hazel Detsiny, from The Royal Foundation, praised the collaboration between Homewards and various industry players, emphasizing the importance of businesses contributing to solving homelessness. The partnership seeks to address root causes of homelessness, including housing, financial stability, and employment, demonstrating the positive outcomes when businesses engage in social responsibility.
