A notorious serial killer, Luis Alfredo Garavito, known as “La Bestia” or “The Beast,” passed away on October 12, 2023, at the age of 66, leaving behind a dark legacy that continues to haunt those who remember his heinous crimes. Garavito, who posed as a street vendor, charity worker, or priest, targeted and brutally murdered children, displaying a level of cruelty that shocked the nation.

Born in 1957 in Quindío, Colombia, Garavito grew up in a troubled family environment, marked by abuse and violence. His own experiences of torture and abuse influenced his disturbed behavior from a young age. By his mid-teens, Garavito had already committed serious crimes, escalating to violent assaults in the early 1980s.

Despite occasional moments of guilt and fleeting attempts at religious redemption, Garavito’s reign of terror continued unchecked. Between 1980 and 1992, he raped and murdered around 200 children, meticulously documenting his victims without arousing suspicion due to his outwardly respectable appearance. However, in 1992, his killing spree began, with the discovery of bodies across various Colombian towns, leading to a nationwide manhunt for the elusive killer.

After years of investigations and connecting the dots between disappearances and murders, authorities arrested Garavito in 1999. Facing multiple charges and overwhelming evidence, he confessed to his crimes, admitting to the gruesome murders of over 190 children.
