“Apprentice Winner Marnie Swindells Opens Up”

It has been a span of two years since Marnie Swindells emerged victorious in The Apprentice 2023, receiving a £250,000 investment from Lord Sugar to expand her Bronx boxing gym brand. Following this triumph, the ex-barrister turned businesswoman encountered a mix of television achievements, business advancement, and personal challenges.

In an exclusive interview with the Mirror, Marnie shares insights into her experiences, navigating through a challenging period, and her aspirations of owning a villa in Greece…

Hello Marnie! Looking back at your win on The Apprentice two years later, how do you perceive that moment now? The victory still feels surreal to me. It was a long-awaited achievement, and when it finally materialized, life seemed to fall into place perfectly. Securing Lord Sugar as my business ally, obtaining £250,000 for my gym, and gaining the confidence to face any challenge were monumental. However, post-show life was not as smooth as it appeared externally.

Could you elaborate on that? Winning the show creates a sense of invincibility, but for me, everything came crashing down simultaneously. Dealing with the end of an 11-year relationship in which I was engaged was devastating. Suddenly, I found myself navigating life and business solo, which was exceptionally challenging. And all this while you were launching Bronx? Indeed. The pressure was immense—while I was Lord Sugar’s new business partner in public, privately, I was enduring heartbreak and significant personal struggles.

I had to maintain a facade of strength, positivity, and professionalism even when I was barely holding it together. Many women, especially working mothers, can relate to the idea of putting on a brave front while dealing with private challenges. That must have been incredibly tough. Did you face additional setbacks during that time? It felt like life was relentlessly testing me. Amidst our launch event, my living arrangements unexpectedly changed. I had to relocate to a place without basic amenities like electricity and running water—I was charging lights at the gym and attending glamorous events as if everything was normal. In that same period, the gym was burglarized, and I even received a death threat. It was a series of unfortunate events.

How did you manage to cope with all of this? It was a decisive moment of fight or flight. While a part of me wanted to escape, the business required my unwavering dedication. I had committed to Lord Sugar and the Bronx community, and I had to honor those commitments. Reflecting now, I take pride in not giving up. And how is your relationship with Lord Sugar at present? We communicate weekly, and he has been incredibly supportive and understanding. Our partnership thrives because of my transparency—I share both successes and challenges with him. He values this open communication. Business entails ups and downs, and he knows I will always be forthright with him. Do you exchange messages with Lord Sugar on WhatsApp? Yes, we do – he is on WhatsApp, although he is quite occupied. While we don’t share vacation photos, perhaps if Bronx expands to ten gyms, I might finally secure an invitation to his yacht. That would be wonderful! During the show, you were closely observed by Baroness Karren Brady. Did she inspire you? Absolutely. Karren is a remarkable woman who commands
