Swiss authorities announced on Monday the apprehension of a 43-year-old individual in connection with a fatal shooting during a music event in Aarau over the weekend. The incident resulted in the tragic death of a 22-year-old Italian woman and left five others wounded in the early hours of Sunday at a venue located at a covered horse racing track.
Following an extensive operation, law enforcement officers arrested a 43-year-old Swiss man just before 1 a.m. on Monday on suspicion of carrying out the attack. The authorities disclosed that investigations are ongoing to determine the precise circumstances, background, and potential motives behind the incident, with the initial belief that a single perpetrator was involved.
Authorities stated that they are exploring three potential motives for the shooting, including a mass shooting scenario, a possible act of terrorism, or another undisclosed criminal reason. Evidence recovered at the crime scene suggested the presence of two different bullet calibers, potentially originating from a handgun and a larger weapon, potentially an assault rifle.
While the Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger mentioned similarities between the recovered cartridges and those used in Russian AK-74 assault rifles, the police have not commented on this information. The victim, identified as Maria Spinelli by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, was the 22-year-old Italian who tragically lost her life in the incident.
