Singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, known for her accolades, is soon launching a new book titled “NEWS,” showcasing a collection of political paintings inspired by the constant news cycle. The book features 23 paintings, with Mitchell revealing in the book that she shifted her focus from music to her passion for painting.
During George Bush’s presidency and the 9/11 attacks, Mitchell created a series of political artworks. In the current socio-political climate, she felt compelled to express her concerns through her art, emphasizing the responsibility of artists to raise their voices.
Drawing parallels to iconic protest works like Picasso’s Guernica and Charlie Chaplin’s film “The Great Dictator,” Mitchell views “NEWS” as her own form of protest—a visual statement challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths.
Having a longstanding passion for painting, Mitchell’s artistic journey traces back to her enrollment at Calgary’s Alberta College of Art in 1963. In 2022, she released another art book, “Morning Glory on the Vine: Early Songs and Drawings,” featuring watercolor paintings, poems, and lyrics.
“NEWS” is set for release on November 4 and is available for pre-order on Mitchell’s website, offering both standard and signed editions. Additionally, signed copies will be auctioned through Julien’s Publishing from October 15 to October 29, with proceeds benefiting organizations such as the ACLU and Save the Children.
Recently attaining U.S. citizenship, Mitchell shared a video of her naturalization ceremony on October 13, marking a journey that began over six decades ago. Although born in Fort Macleod, Alta., Mitchell’s music, including hits like “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” reflects her experiences living and working in the United States.
