“Canadian Researchers Win Top Honors in Global Ecology Image Contest”

Two Canadian researchers have been recognized in a global image competition that shines a spotlight on ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition recently honored 11 photos from researchers worldwide at different career stages. The images showcase animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural scenes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), clinched the top spot in the research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” On the other hand, Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, triumphed in the “protecting our planet” category with his image named “A bridge between past and present.”

For researchers, utilizing images is a vital way to document their work and provide a glimpse into the world of science. According to Brennan, such images play a crucial role in establishing public trust in the importance of environmental education and ecological research.

Brennan captured the essence of “Intertidal education” while overseeing undergraduate students conducting a long-term fish monitoring project in St. Andrews, N.B. The photo showcases the students engaged in monitoring coastal fish species, highlighting a moment of curiosity on their faces, set against the backdrop of a full moon, which added an artistic touch to the scene.

Meanwhile, Tian’s winning image, “A bridge between past and present,” is a mosaic of 33 drone photos depicting the Long Sault Parkway that connects 11 islands in the upper St. Lawrence River. This photo offers a panoramic view of the region, emphasizing the interconnectedness of ecosystems and underscoring the impact of science on conservation efforts.

Both Brennan and Tian emphasize the significance of sharing their research through images to raise awareness about ecological studies and the importance of preserving natural environments. By showcasing their work visually, they aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world among the general public.

Furthermore, the BMC image competition featured a range of stunning photographs that captured diverse aspects of ecological research and the beauty of the natural world. The winning images offer a unique perspective on various ecological themes, serving as a powerful tool to inspire conservation efforts and promote environmental awareness.
