“13-Year-Old Sets World Record in Nova Scotia Tuna Tournament”

On the coast of Nova Scotia, a 13-year-old girl made headlines by setting a new world record for tuna fishing at the 22nd annual Wedgeport Tuna Tournament and Festival. Délynn Jacquard, aboard the Pelagic Predator, achieved this feat by reeling in a massive 711-pound catch, potentially securing the International Game Fish Association female junior world record.

Jacquard’s remarkable catch surpassed the previous record of 618 pounds, held for 12 years by Nova Scotian Jenna Gavin. Reflecting on her achievement, Jacquard expressed initial doubts but ultimately felt proud of her accomplishment after a rigorous hour-long battle reeling in the tuna.

The Pelagic Predator, captained by Délynn’s father, Camille Jacquard, has been a fixture in the tournament for about two decades. Despite her success, Délynn remains uncertain about participating in next year’s tournament.

Brandon Doucette, a tournament board member, anticipates that it may take up to six months for Jacquard’s record to be officially recognized. The Wedgeport tournament assesses fish weight after partial gutting, unlike the IGFA’s standard of pre-gutting weight. Jacquard’s tuna weighed 711 pounds fresh and 635 pounds post-partial gutting.

In addition to Jacquard’s achievement, another notable milestone was reached in the tournament. Capt. Brent Pothier on the Lucas & Noah vessel reeled in an 801-pound bluefin tuna, setting a new tournament record. This catch marked the first time a fish surpassed the 800-pound mark in the tournament’s history, surpassing the previous record set in 2014.

Doucette highlighted the tournament’s significance in both setting records and honoring Wedgeport’s rich angling history, known for hosting the International Tuna Cup Match from the 1930s to the 1960s. He emphasized the community’s enthusiasm for the event, celebrating both cultural heritage and record-breaking achievements.

All tuna catches made during the tournament align with regional commercial quotas, ensuring that the thousands of pounds of tuna caught find their way onto restaurant menus or dining tables. The event’s success not only showcases remarkable fishing skills but also fosters a sense of community pride and tradition.
