“Toronto Duo’s Creative Journey from Drama to Comedy and Back Again”

Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol’s partnership in the creative realm began with a rather serious project. The duo from Toronto crossed paths as teenagers through Johnson’s then-girlfriend. Johnson had aspirations in filmmaking, while McCarrol was inclined towards composing film scores. Their initial collaboration saw McCarrol scoring one of Johnson’s student films that delved into a poignant storyline.

The narrative revolved around an actor’s son, who was rendered deaf due to a lighting mishap on a film set. To cope with the situation, the son projected his father’s deafness onto his own inability to speak. Reflecting on this early work, Johnson described it as dark and weighty, a departure from their future endeavors.

Their trajectory led them to co-create and act in the whimsically humorous Canadian comedy series, “Nirvanna the Band the Show,” which unexpectedly gained popularity as a feature film adaptation earlier this year. Their latest venture, “Tony,” delves back into their earlier dramatic inclinations, focusing on a biopic centered on the renowned chef and author Anthony Bourdain.

The film, produced by A24, features Dominic Sessa portraying a young Bourdain at 19, a budding novelist seeking direction who secures a summer job at a seafood restaurant in Cape Cod. Here, a Brazilian chef, portrayed by Antonio Banderas, endeavors to instill humility in the aspiring writer. Drawing inspiration from Bourdain’s acclaimed memoir “Kitchen Confidential,” the drama unfolds against the backdrop of Bourdain’s formative years.

Johnson, not initially a Bourdain enthusiast, shared his approach to filmmaking, aiming to explore unfamiliar territories to maintain his engagement. He resonated with the theme of youthful ambition and self-discovery, reminiscent of their teenage aspirations.

McCarrol, known for scoring all of Johnson’s films, including the award-winning “BlackBerry,” embraced a different musical direction for “Tony.” Transitioning from the grandiose orchestral sound of “Nirvanna,” McCarrol crafted a minimalistic, warm score dominated by piano notes, mirroring the introspective journey of a young Bourdain.

The soundtrack, while lively and buoyant, also delves into the darker facets of Bourdain’s persona, capturing his inner turmoil through recurring musical motifs. The music serves as a conduit to Bourdain’s emotions, offering insights into his character’s unspoken struggles.

In a departure from his usual Toronto-based production team, Johnson ventured into the American studio system for “Tony,” a move that introduced him to a more structured filmmaking environment. Upon his return to Canada, the collaborative process with his longtime team at Zapruder Films enriched the project, highlighting the importance of collective input in refining the film.

McCarrol emphasized the seamless collaboration between him and Johnson, where their shared vision and understanding obviated the need for extensive discussions during the scoring process. This rapport will extend to their future projects, with McCarrol set to executive produce and compose music for Johnson’s upcoming film centered on a Vice Canada editor entangled in drug smuggling.

“Tony” is set to premiere in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver on Friday, with a nationwide release slated for August 21, showcasing the culmination of Johnson and McCarrol’s creative synergy.
