“Thrilling Indian Relay Racing Unites Tradition and Competition”

On a scorching August day, spirited racehorses prance, their hooves creating a rhythmic melody on the sandy track at Onion Lake Cree Nation’s Heritage Park. The resonant voice of the announcer signals the beginning of the fifth and final day of Indian Relay Racing, drawing eager spectators who gather around the white rail fence, exuding anticipation.

Event organizer Candy Jackson expresses gratitude for the overwhelming support, highlighting the participation of 14 teams in the thrilling sport that involves riders completing three laps bareback on different horses, executing swift exchanges that require nimble dismounting and mounting techniques.

The intensity of the races is evident as collisions, horse behavior challenges, and unexpected falls can swiftly alter the race’s course. Over the past decade, Indian Relay Racing has gained prominence across the Prairies, becoming a popular summer attraction with substantial cash prizes.

Tyson Head, a seasoned horse racer from Mistawasis, Saskatchewan, notes the increasing popularity of the sport, with more teams, fervent fans, and lucrative rewards becoming commonplace. The surge in interest has attracted additional sponsors, fostering a vibrant racing community that continues to expand.

While the sport’s growth presents opportunities for new participants and budding teams, Jackson emphasizes the importance of preserving the sport’s cultural roots and sense of unity. Initiating race events with traditional ceremonies and prayers, like the pipe ceremony, ensures a connection to heritage for both riders and spectators.

Amidst the pursuit of victory and financial gains, riders like cousins Kyla and Kayden Stanley emphasize the significance of spiritual preparation through prayers and rituals, underscoring the sport’s inherent risks and the need for a respectful approach to racing.

Ultimately, beyond the thrill of competition and accolades, Indian Relay Racing serves as a testament to the riders’ resilience, cultural identity, and the profound bond between horse and rider, embodying the spirit of true warriors connected to their ancestral traditions.
