Canada and the United States are in the final stages of negotiating a trade deal, which is anticipated to involve U.S. President Donald Trump reducing tariff rates on Canadian products in exchange for ensuring American alcohol is back on provincial store shelves. Prime Minister Mark Carney briefed provincial leaders on the evolving agreement, which aims to aid industries affected by tariffs but may face criticism for not completely removing Trump’s tariffs.
Although specifics of the deal have not been disclosed, a source familiar with the negotiations revealed that U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum are set to drop from 50% to 25%, with ongoing discussions on derivatives and exemptions. Additionally, the agreement is expected to lower Trump’s tariff rate on Canadian-made vehicles from 25% to 15%.
Given the highly integrated nature of the North American auto market, vehicles assembled in Canada typically contain over 50% U.S.-made components. Consequently, if tariffs are applied solely to the non-U.S. portion, the effective rate could decrease by up to 7.5%, as per the source.
