The ex-Navy chief has cautioned that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could escalate into a nuclear showdown. Admiral Lord West, the former First Sea Lord, raised concerns about Britain being essentially engaged in a conflict with Moscow. He highlighted “grey zone warfare,” including Russian activities like sabotaging undersea cables and drone trespasses along Nato’s eastern borders.
In a podcast with the Lord Speaker, Lord West stated that avoiding a full-scale war between Nato and Russia was crucial to prevent potential nuclear escalation. Meanwhile, former Nato General Secretary Lord Robertson expressed that Britain is inadequately prepared for the current threats it faces.
Security experts have previously signaled rising Russian threats against the UK, such as cyber intrusions, spy missions, arson attacks, and submarine infiltrations. MI5 Director Sir Ken McCallum emphasized Russia’s disruptive intentions worldwide, noting a shift to employing disposable proxies after spy expulsions from European embassies.
Lord Robertson stressed the urgency of supporting Ukraine against Vladimir Putin’s ambitions, which extend beyond territorial expansion in eastern Ukraine. He emphasized the need to convince Putin that victory is unattainable, as the current territorial gains are minimal.
The situation underscores the critical need for enhanced defense preparedness and international cooperation in addressing evolving security challenges posed by Russia’s aggressive tactics.
