“Sainsbury’s Discontinues Chop Chop App, Merges Features into Main App”

Sainsbury’s has discontinued its Chop Chop rapid delivery app and merged its functionality into the main Sainsbury’s app. Originally launched in 2016, Chop Chop aimed to provide grocery deliveries within 60 minutes at an additional cost, operating in 50 Sainsbury’s stores.

Regular users of Chop Chop may have observed that the standalone app has been taken down, redirecting download attempts to the primary Sainsbury’s app. Jim Banks, Sainsbury’s head of experience design, announced the decommissioning of the app to streamline the shopping experience. He stated, “Chop Chop is no more. Long live Chop Chop!”

Banks further explained that the consolidation of the Chop Chop app into the Sainsbury’s app was aimed at simplifying the customer experience by eliminating the need to choose between multiple apps. This transition involved extensive effort from various teams in Experience Design, product development, and engineering, with special recognition given to the App Team for their contributions.

Chop Chop, which competed with Tesco’s Whoosh rapid delivery service promising deliveries in as little as 20 minutes, has now been integrated into the Sainsbury’s main app. In other UK supermarket news, Co-op has disclosed plans to open 18 new or upgraded stores in the first quarter of 2026.

The initial Co-op store of 2026 is set to open in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire, as part of a new neighborhood development. Additionally, several stores, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated site in Ealing, London, will be reopened following renovations.

Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, emphasized the company’s focus on creating local stores that serve as community hubs, offering quality products, value for customers, and a variety of deals and promotions. The announcement also highlighted Co-op’s commitment to establishing thousands of new apprenticeships by 2030 through a £70 million investment in the Levy Share service.
