The Deputy Labour Leader has strongly criticized negative personal briefings, labeling them as completely inappropriate. In light of recent conflicts over Keir Starmer’s leadership, Lucy Powell emphasized the need for a fundamental shift in the conduct of politics. Powell, who was removed from her position as leader of the Commons by the Prime Minister, expressed dismay over the detrimental impact of such briefings, stating that they contribute to a decline in the quality of politics and politicians.
She stressed the necessity of a cultural overhaul in handling such situations, advocating for accountability for those engaged in such behaviors. Powell also highlighted the presence of misogyny in the briefings directed against her during the deputy leadership election, where she emerged victorious over Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson.
Reflecting on her dismissal, the Manchester Central MP revealed her concerns upon learning about issues involving Angela Rayner’s stamp duty. Describing the phone call that led to her removal, Powell indicated her awareness of the precarious nature of her position due to her outspokenness and delivery of tough messages. Despite feeling that she had performed well in her role, she was unsurprised by the call from Downing Street signaling her departure.
A month into her role as Deputy Leader, Powell emphasized her deep understanding of people’s priorities and the need for clear communication of Labour values within the government. She emphasized the importance of focusing on core governmental responsibilities and meeting public expectations effectively, rather than attempting to out-Reform Reform. Powell underscored the significance of managing borders and immigration as integral parts of governing successfully.
