A construction worker trapped for several hours under debris from an ancient tower in Rome was successfully rescued today. The incident occurred during renovation work on the Torre dei Conti near the Colosseum when a section of the tower collapsed, leaving the worker stuck. Emergency responders carefully extricated him using a telescopic aerial ladder and transferred him to an ambulance on a stretcher. Though his condition remains uncertain, Rome’s chief firefighter commander confirmed that the worker was conscious.
Following a challenging rescue effort that spanned several hours, authorities were able to free the worker from the rubble. Due to the precarious conditions and ongoing collapses, the operation required meticulous planning and execution. Ultimately, the rescue team managed to access the worker by utilizing various methods, including a drone and a crane.
The structural damage was severe, affecting key parts of the tower such as the central buttress, stairwell, and roof. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri emphasized the complexity of the operation due to the risk of further collapses, underscoring the importance of caution during the rescue mission.
Aside from the trapped worker, three other individuals were safely rescued from the site earlier, while one worker sustained critical injuries and was hospitalized. The Torre dei Conti, a historic building undergoing extensive restoration, has been the focus of significant renovation efforts to preserve its cultural significance and historical value.
Italian authorities are investigating the incident for potential charges related to negligence. Eyewitnesses, including a German student visiting the area, described the dramatic scene as emergency responders worked tirelessly to save the trapped worker. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed hope for a successful rescue and extended sympathies to the worker and his family during this challenging time.
