A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, is now in custody, facing three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, who is currently serving a 12-month disqualification from racing due to a previous offense, was denied bail during his recent court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.

The charges against Tarrant include three counts of armed robbery, entering premises with intent to commit a crime, and possession of dangerous drugs, as reported by Racenet.com. An armed robbery offense carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison, with the possibility of a life sentence in cases involving armed robbery with violence or collaboration.

Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19. The 31-year-old jockey, who last participated in a race in August, has achieved significant success in his career, having won 502 races, including three Group races. His notable victory was in 2015 when he triumphed in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

In 2020, Tarrant received a six-month ban after admitting to assaulting another jockey in the weighing room. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for one year for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry regarding alleged falsification of health assessment forms used for licensing.

The case was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, where Tarrant was instructed to provide a plea. However, he did not respond within the specified timeframe. The Commission panel emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity within the industry and highlighted the obligation of licensed individuals to cooperate with inquiries.

Stewards determined that a 12-month disqualification was appropriate in Tarrant’s case, with the penalty effective from October 8, 2025, to October 8, 2026.
