Labour’s Angela Rayner has voiced support for eliminating the two-child benefit cap, aiming to combat child poverty. Drawing from her personal background, she emphasized the importance of not penalizing children. Rayner criticized the notion that individuals have children solely for benefits, noting that child benefit amounts to just £20 weekly.

In an interview with the Sunday Mirror, Rayner applauded signals from Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves suggesting the removal of the two-child benefit limit in the upcoming statement on November 26. She stressed the need to address child poverty, highlighting the impact of the benefit cap.

Rayner urged the government to consider the evidence and align policies with Labour values, emphasizing the need to support vulnerable children. She highlighted her own challenging upbringing and emphasized the importance of not punishing children for their circumstances.

Additionally, over 40 celebrities, including Arlene Phillips, Mark Bonnar, Jason Isaacs, and Bill Nighy, have united to call for the abolition of the two-child benefit limit in the Budget. In a letter organized by the Trussell foodbank charity, they urged the Prime Minister to end the limit, attributing it to increased child hardship.

Introduced in 2017, the two-child benefit limit restricts child tax credit and universal credit to the first two children in most households. The Prime Minister has expressed personal commitment to reducing child poverty rates, which currently affect approximately 4.5 million children.
