Cricket Legend Tony Pigott Dies at 67

Former England cricketer Tony Pigott has passed away at the age of 67. Pigott, who had a successful career with over 1,000 wickets, died on Sunday.

The ex-Sussex seam bowler had a heart attack after previously battling oesophageal cancer. Pigott was renowned for his performances in the County Championship and his lone appearance for England, which became a memorable cricket moment.

In 1984, Pigott received a last-minute call-up to play for England in a Test match against New Zealand in Christchurch. Despite having wedding plans during the series, Pigott postponed his wedding to honor the call and traveled to New Zealand, where he managed to take two wickets.

Unfortunately, Pigott’s debut was marred by a loss to New Zealand, who won by an innings and 132 runs within three days at Lancaster Park. Despite this, Pigott’s contribution to cricket was significant.

During his 18-year tenure at Sussex and subsequent move to Surrey in 1994, Pigott faced challenges with injuries, eventually transitioning to become Surrey’s second-team coach. In 1997, he returned to Sussex as CEO, leading a successful takeover and contributing to the team’s victory in the 2003 County Championship.

Pigott’s legacy extended beyond the field as he played a pivotal role in installing floodlights at Hove, making it the first cricket ground in the UK to have them. He was affectionately known as ‘Lester,’ likely after the renowned jockey Lester Piggott.

Following Pigott’s passing, tributes have poured in from the cricket community. Former Sussex captain Chris Adams expressed his deep sadness and gratitude for Pigott’s influence on the club and his personal life. Adams credited Pigott for his positive impact on the team and his decision to join Sussex in 1998.

Additionally, Ian Gould, a former Sussex wicket-keeper and umpire, paid his respects to Pigott, describing him as one of cricket’s great personalities.
