Expert Warns: Spices Could Interfere with Medications

A warning has been issued by a pharmaceutical expert regarding the potential interference of certain medications with the consumption of foods containing specific spices. Dipa Kamdar, a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at Kingston University, highlighted that spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger, known for their health benefits in areas such as inflammation, blood sugar regulation, dementia, and heart disease, could impact the efficacy of prescription medicines.

These spices, traditionally valued for their health properties since ancient times, contain potent nutrients that might conflict with certain prescription drugs, according to Ms. Kamdar. She emphasized on The Conversation website that spices have been historically used not only for flavoring food but also for their healing attributes in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. She posed the question of whether innocuous spices could disrupt medication effectiveness.

Regarding cinnamon, Ms. Kamdar elaborated on its active components such as cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and coumarin. Cinnamon oil, extracted from the bark or leaves, is commonly utilized in food flavoring, fragrances, and herbal remedies. She pointed out that cinnamon offers various potential health advantages, including antioxidant properties, reducing inflammation, regulating blood sugar levels, lowering heart disease risk, enhancing brain function, aiding digestion, and combating infections. However, recent research from the University of Mississippi has raised concerns that cinnamon might diminish the effectiveness of certain medications by accelerating drug clearance processes.

Ms. Kamdar cited case reports indicating that cinnamon supplements could elevate bleeding risks when combined with anticoagulants, likely due to coumarin affecting liver enzymes involved in drug breakdown. Additionally, there is evidence suggesting possible interactions between cinnamon and other medications such as painkillers, antidepressants, anti-cancer drugs, and diabetes medications. She emphasized that potential risks arise from high doses, particularly in supplement form, rather than small culinary amounts.

Turmeric, containing curcumin renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics, also has potential interactions with medications. Ms. Kamdar mentioned that limited information on turmeric’s drug interactions comes from lab and animal studies. Curcumin’s impact on liver enzymes could affect how drugs are metabolized, potentially influencing antidepressants, blood pressure medications, chemotherapy drugs, and certain antibiotics. The blood-thinning properties of turmeric could intensify the effects of medications like warfarin or aspirin.

Ginger, known for its anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory benefits, could also affect medication processing due to active compounds like gingerol. Ms. Kamdar cautioned that ginger’s mild blood-thinning effect could increase bleeding risks when combined with anticoagulants. While some studies suggest ginger might lower blood sugar, further research is needed to understand its interactions with anti-diabetic medications fully.

Individuals taking medications, particularly blood thinners, diabetes treatments, or chemotherapy drugs, are advised by Ms. Kamdar to consult with their GP or pharmacist before incorporating new herbal supplements. She emphasized that using spices in typical culinary amounts is generally safe and offers both flavor and potential health benefits to meals. However, caution should be exercised, especially with herbal supplements in high doses.
