Stephen Fry’s friend recently shared details about the star’s response to revealing his cocaine use during a critical health scare. The renowned TV host, aged 68, found himself on the brink of death after indulging in a combination of alcohol and cocaine.
Ben Elton, a close friend of Stephen and a well-known TV writer and comedian, recounted the harrowing experience of rushing Stephen to the hospital in a taxi when he realized the severity of the situation. Doctors informed Ben that Stephen, known for his intelligence, was perilously close to sustaining irreversible brain damage and imminent death.
Describing the unsettling night, Ben mentioned the excessive drinking and cocaine use that led to the alarming incident. He recalled how they were smoking heavily and Stephen was consuming cocaine, a fact that Stephen later candidly included in his own memoir.
Despite feeling anxious about the implications of Stephen’s drug use on his career, Ben felt compelled to inform the medical staff about the situation. Stephen, although in a dazed state, reassured Ben that he was aware of the disclosure and even hinted at writing about it in the future.
Ben reflected on the potential catastrophic outcome if he had not intervened promptly and emphasized the seriousness of the incident in his new book titled “What Have I Done?”
The enduring friendship between Stephen and Ben dates back to their collaboration on the renowned TV series “Blackadder,” where Stephen portrayed memorable characters crafted by Ben and Richard Curtis.
