A warning has been issued to Aldi shoppers to remain cautious and avoid falling victim to a new scam circulating on popular social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Reports from cybersecurity experts at Malwarebytes have highlighted a surge in deceptive posts offering discounted food boxes to Aldi customers through a link, survey completion, and prize entry. Exploiting financial strains, the so-called “Aldi meat box” scam targets consumers seeking to save money.
One fraudulent post discovered by Malwarebytes claimed that individuals over 40 could purchase an Aldi meat box for under $10, sparking interest among users. Those who engage with the links are redirected to a fake website prompting them to disclose personal and financial details, including payment card information, names, and addresses.
While the scam has primarily affected individuals in Australia and the Netherlands, UK shoppers are advised to exercise vigilance. Malwarebytes suggests being wary of overly enticing deals, especially those offering premium goods at unusually low prices associated with reputable brands.
The cybersecurity company also warns against narratives involving personal connections to Aldi, as scammers often fabricate stories to establish credibility. Arbitrary age restrictions, like targeting those over 40, are used to create a sense of exclusivity and relevance.
Scammers employ urgency tactics, portraying actions as quick and risk-free to prompt immediate responses from users. Malwarebytes advises skepticism towards social media posts promising premium items at heavily discounted rates, emphasizing the prevalence of scams in such scenarios.
Legitimate retailers typically promote genuine offers through official channels rather than through dubious posts shared by unknown or recently created social media profiles. Consumers are reminded not to disclose sensitive information on websites accessed via unsolicited social media content, especially when offers seem exceptionally generous.
The importance of verifying sources and exercising caution online is emphasized, with Malwarebytes urging individuals to approach suspicious offers with skepticism until proven otherwise.
