The latest data reveals a significant increase in reported crimes on the London Underground, sparking discussions about the potential introduction of women-only tube carriages by Transport for London (TfL). A petition initiated by UCL student Camille Brown, 21, urges Sadiq Khan and TfL to implement at least one women-only carriage on all tube lines, with over 9,600 signatures gathered so far.
Recent statistics from the British Transport Police indicate a sharp rise in violent incidents on the London Underground between October 2021 and October 2023. In response to inquiries by Caroline Pidgeon, former leader of the Liberal Democrats in the London Assembly, Mayor Khan addressed the escalating violence on the tube network.
Mayor Khan highlighted that violent offenses on the London Underground increased by 20% compared to the previous year, with 3,542 reported incidents between December 2022 and November 2023. He attributed these rises to the return of passenger numbers post-pandemic, emphasizing that the comparison to crime levels during the pandemic is not entirely valid.
TfL and the British Transport Police have been actively encouraging the reporting of all crimes, particularly underreported offenses such as hate crimes, sexual offenses, and harassment. Despite these efforts, reported sexual offenses have risen by over 10% on public transport in London, with 2,671 incidents reported between February 2023 and January 2024.
While TfL acknowledged the surge in reports following an anti-harassment campaign, a survey by the British Transport Police revealed that over a third of women have experienced sexual harassment while commuting. Additionally, a Girlguiding survey showed that 56% of individuals aged 11 to 21 feel unsafe traveling alone on public transport.
Although demands for women-only carriages persist, TfL has stated that they do not plan to introduce such carriages. Siwan Hayward, Director of Security, Policing, and Enforcement for TfL, emphasized the importance of collaboration with the police to ensure the safety of all passengers and the enforcement of preventative measures against offenders.
Efforts are ongoing to address sexual harassment on the network, with a focus on empowering individuals to report incidents. TfL encourages reporting any unacceptable behavior to the police or staff for immediate action against offenders and the implementation of preventive measures.
