A tragic incident occurred when a young British boy, Oliver Gorman, lost his life due to participating in a risky TikTok challenge known as “chroming”. The dangerous trend involves inhaling aerosols to achieve a high, and in Oliver’s case, it involved Lynx and Aldi deodorants. His mother, Clare Gillespie, shared a cautionary message about this alarming TikTok trend during the inquest into Oliver’s untimely death.

Testimony at the Manchester South Coroner’s Court revealed that Oliver had faced verbal bullying but was otherwise a vibrant child with a healthy social circle. Clare, now residing in Shrewsbury, emphasized the importance of parental awareness regarding symbols and emojis associated with social media platforms, particularly referencing the Netflix series Adolescence.

Expressing her emotional turmoil, Clare highlighted the need for parents to comprehend the risks associated with social media influences and substance abuse. She initiated a campaign named Oliver’s Awareness to raise awareness about the perils of social media, solvent misuse, and bullying.

Following a family vacation, Oliver retreated to his room on May 5 and was discovered by his mother unresponsive under his duvet. Despite medical intervention, he was pronounced deceased at Tameside General Hospital. The coroner’s report indicated the presence of five aerosol canisters in Oliver’s room, leading to a verdict of death by misadventure. Concerns were raised about the inadequacy of warning labels on aerosols and the accessibility of these products to minors.

The assistant coroner emphasized the influence of social media challenges like those on TikTok, urging for increased awareness and stricter regulations. Clare expressed her distress over the dangers of social media and called for vigilance in monitoring children’s online activities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
