A significant transformation in how millions of people in the UK make phone calls is on the horizon, and it is crucial for homeowners to take action before an approaching deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have served as a communication lifeline for many years are set to be phased out and replaced by advanced technology known as Digital Voice, which utilizes broadband for making calls.
This upgrade not only meets the demands of the modern era but also enhances reliability and introduces new features like improved call clarity, the option to redirect incoming calls to mobile phones, and enhanced screening capabilities to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls.
Scheduled to take effect from January 2027, this major overhaul has prompted BT to launch a campaign, fronted by Clare Balding, under the banner ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch’ to prompt households to inspect their landlines and ensure readiness for the digital era.
This initiative aligns with recent research findings indicating that individuals in the UK tend to procrastinate important tasks, often assuming that as long as something is functional, there is no urgent need for action.
Clare Balding emphasized the importance of responding promptly when contacted by the provider to ensure uninterrupted landline services. BT assures customers that they will receive guidance throughout the transition process. Customers are expected to retain their current numbers, and costs are not anticipated to increase with the switch to Digital Voice. Most households will simply need to connect their existing phones to their broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket.
While most transitions should be seamless, customers encountering issues may need to contact their provider for assistance in resolving them. Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, emphasized the significance of heeding messages from service providers to avoid disruptions in essential connections.
BT underscores that customers with special requirements, including users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, should notify their provider promptly to ensure appropriate support is in place.
Digital Voice, BT’s new home phone service, operates by leveraging broadband technology instead of copper wires. It offers modern conveniences such as Multi Call, three-way conference calling, and call diversion to any designated number, including mobile phones. The service also promises improved call quality, eliminating issues like crackling conversations, although users will need a compatible Digital Home phone to access these benefits.
For most households, upgrading to Digital Voice will not alter their phone usage habits. The cost of the new service is bundled with the broadband service in a single package price without any additional charges for Digital Voice.
