“40% of Households Still Cutting Costs Despite Easing Crisis”

Recent research has unveiled that more than 40% of households are still implementing cost-cutting measures to manage essential expenses, despite indications that the burden of the cost of living crisis might be easing for some individuals.

A survey conducted by consumer group Which? highlighted that a significant portion of the population continues to face financial constraints. Out of those surveyed, 44% reported resorting to actions like depleting their savings, selling possessions, or borrowing additional funds to cover crucial expenses such as utility bills, housing fees, groceries, school supplies, or medications in the past month.

Although there is a slight decrease in the number of individuals encountering such difficult choices, with the percentage dropping from 47% in December to a peak of 64% in September 2022.

However, the survey also revealed a rise in the percentage of respondents who admitted missing a household payment in the past month, increasing from 4.5% to 5.8%. Nonetheless, this figure is significantly lower than the nearly 10% reported in November 2023.

Furthermore, the survey indicated a growing optimism regarding the UK economy, which could be a positive development for Chancellor Rachel Reeves and the Labour government. This optimism could potentially boost consumer confidence, as many households with disposable income are currently refraining from spending.

Despite the slight improvement in sentiment, only 14% of adults believe that the UK economy will see progress in the next 12 months, while over half anticipate a deterioration.

Rocio Concha, Director of Policy and Advocacy at Which?, emphasized that while there is a decrease in households resorting to financial adjustments, many families are still struggling to make ends meet. With the persistent cold weather extending into February, the additional pressure of maintaining a warm household could exacerbate financial pressures.

Unpaid carer Paul Ridley shared his ongoing challenges amid the cost of living crisis. Paul and his wife Sarah care for their two adult children, including their son Keith, who has complex needs. Despite their full-time caregiving responsibilities, Paul does not qualify for Carer’s Allowance, adding to their financial strain.

Paul highlighted the escalating food prices, forcing the family to sometimes skip meals. The impact of rising costs is evident in their reduced grocery purchases, with items becoming pricier and smaller in quantity, affecting their budget.

Energy costs also weigh heavily on the family, particularly due to Keith’s medical condition requiring frequent use of household appliances. The dilemma of balancing heating expenses with Keith’s comfort further adds to their financial stress.

Paul emphasized the immense pressure the cost of living crisis places on caregivers, compounding their existing responsibilities. The ongoing struggle highlights the financial hardships faced by many families amidst the current economic climate.
