A man experienced vivid hallucinations of a woman resembling “Baywatch-style boobs” for a period of ten days following a recent eye surgery, likened to a “jumpscare” surprise. Mark Bryan, aged 45, underwent laser surgery on his right retina in August to address scar tissue resulting from diabetic retinopathy, a condition linked to his type-I diabetes. Just six days post-surgery, the busty vision named ‘Taloula’ appeared unexpectedly to Mark while he was cooking sausages, persisting for a decade thereafter.
Mark humorously compared the persistent hallucination to having a youthful crush poster of Pamela Anderson on his face, amusingly alarming his wife and causing moments of uncertainty about his mental state. The image of Taloula would unexpectedly manifest during routine activities such as brushing teeth or watching TV, even appearing when Mark closed his eyes.
The persistent and intrusive nature of the hallucination led Mark to feel mortified and confined to his home for fear of the image surprising him in public, causing him to jump repeatedly throughout the day. However, after enduring ten days of these startling experiences, Mark was relieved when the hallucination finally dissipated, attributed to Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS), a rare phenomenon causing visual hallucinations unrelated to mental health issues.
CBS hallucinations can range from simple patterns to intricate images like those experienced by Mark, often persisting for extended periods. Mark’s vision issues stemmed from diabetic retinopathy, a condition affecting the retina due to high blood sugar levels, which he underwent surgery to alleviate. Despite finding the surgery distressing, Mark eventually discovered that the hallucinations were a result of his brain compensating for reduced input from his right eye following the surgical procedure.
Subsequent medical interventions helped Mark overcome the hallucinations, with his optician explaining the personalized nature of such experiences. Mark, reflecting on the ordeal with humor, acknowledged the awkwardness of the situation but chose to find amusement in the peculiar circumstances.
