Georgia Harrison Advocates for Safer Public Transport & Support for Abuse Survivors

Georgia Harrison, who faced distress during a court case where her ex-boyfriend Stephen Bear was sentenced to 21 months in prison for voyeurism and sharing intimate footage of her, has been advocating for enhanced support for sexual abuse survivors. Additionally, Georgia shared her views on Transport For London’s recent decision not to introduce women-only carriages on the London Underground.

Reflecting on her personal encounters and those of her friends, Georgia highlighted instances of harassment and inappropriate behavior experienced on public transport. She emphasized the need for a safer environment, especially during rush hours, citing examples of unwanted advances and uncomfortable situations faced by women.

Georgia expressed surprise at London’s reluctance to consider implementing female-only carriages, pointing out that various countries like Japan, India, and Indonesia have adopted similar measures to ensure safety for women. She emphasized the importance of providing options for women traveling alone, particularly at night or in situations involving alcohol consumption.

Furthermore, Georgia suggested increasing CCTV surveillance on trains and stationing more security personnel to address issues promptly. She emphasized the need to combat misogynistic attitudes in society, advocating for education, and awareness to promote respect and understanding towards women.

Addressing the prevalence of image-based abuse, Georgia shared her efforts to support victims seeking help and resources. She highlighted challenges in reporting such incidents, including restrictive time frames and the need for stronger legal measures to combat image-based sexual abuse effectively.

Georgia called for image-based abuse to be treated with the same severity as online child pornography, emphasizing the importance of protecting victims and holding perpetrators accountable. She encouraged victims to seek support from organizations like Rape Crisis and emphasized the significance of raising awareness and advocating for policy changes to combat sexual abuse.
