A 98-year-old widow with dementia was evicted from Innage Grange care home in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, where she had lived for five years after depleting her £240,000 life savings on care expenses. Brenda Miles, a retired book-binder facing mobility challenges, requires constant care and had used her savings to cover monthly bills of about £4,000.

Due to her dwindling funds falling below the threshold for state assistance, Brenda was forced to move to a more affordable care home, Hilton Brook House, which charges around £2,400 per month. Despite her family’s efforts to seek financial aid from Shropshire Council to allow her to stay at Innage Grange, the council declined, citing high care costs.

Brenda’s niece, Victoria Fellows, criticized the council for relocating her aunt, stating that the transition has been distressing for Brenda, who had to leave behind the familiar environment and staff she cherished. Victoria expressed disappointment in the council’s handling of the situation, emphasizing the unsuitability of the new care home for Brenda’s needs.

Efforts to appeal to South Shropshire MP Stuart Anderson for a review of the council’s decision were unsuccessful. Victoria highlighted the inadequacies of Brenda’s current living conditions compared to her previous residence at Innage Grange, emphasizing the need for better care tailored to her aunt’s requirements.

Despite the family’s concerns and objections, Shropshire Council declined to provide any comments on the specific case, leaving Brenda’s situation unresolved and her family feeling disregarded in their attempts to secure appropriate care for her.
