“Wetherspoon Launches First European Pub in Spain’s Alicante Airport”

Wetherspoon has recently launched its inaugural pub in Europe, situated at Spain’s Alicante airport, featuring classic English breakfast offerings such as fry-ups and sandwiches. The move marks the popular British chain’s expansion into new territories, catering to travelers en route to destinations like Benidorm.

Despite maintaining its signature British menu staples, the decor of this overseas Wetherspoon pub has undergone a transformation, replacing traditional elements like the iconic Wetherspoon carpet with Spanish tiles and cream-colored walls. The pub, named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, boasts a smaller footprint compared to typical high street Wetherspoon locations.

While some menu variations exist, such as the absence of British fish and chips due to equipment constraints, familiar favorites like the Spoons’ curry remain available, supplemented by unique offerings like Japanese-style Katsu dishes. The pub offers a range of familiar dishes, including a hearty traditional breakfast comprising eggs, bacon, sausage, and beans at a price of 10.25 euros, approximately £8.94.

Open seven days a week from 6 am to 9 pm, the pub features nearly 1,000 square feet of customer space and an outdoor terrace for additional seating options. Wetherspoon founder Tim Martin expressed enthusiasm about the new venture, anticipating its appeal to a diverse customer base, including those traveling to and from the UK via Alicante Airport.

With plans for further international expansion in the pipeline, Wetherspoon aims to introduce more pubs overseas in the coming months and years. The company’s strategic approach includes potential partnerships with franchise operators to facilitate growth beyond its current UK and Ireland locations.

The new Wetherspoon pub at Alicante airport aligns with the brand’s ambitious expansion strategy, with plans to open approximately 30 pubs in the next year, marking a significant milestone for the chain. This move, which includes both company-operated and franchise-run establishments, is expected to create around 1,800 jobs and further solidify Wetherspoon’s presence in the hospitality sector.

As Wetherspoon’s international footprint expands, the company remains committed to offering its signature blend of British pub fare alongside a selection of local dishes and beverages, catering to a diverse clientele seeking a taste of home while abroad.
