Retired legendary jockey Rachael Blackmore has shared the exciting news of her pregnancy with husband and fellow jockey Brian Hayes. The couple recently exchanged vows in a cozy ceremony in West Cork on January 5, after a decade-long friendship.
Announcing the news on her Instagram story, Rachael posted a photo of her Volvo car with a baby pram in the boot, humorously noting the change in contents. The 36-year-old, known for her groundbreaking achievements in horse racing, including being the first female jockey to win the Grand National and leading jockey at Cheltenham, retired last year after amassing 575 wins.
Her retirement came after triumphantly partnering with Minella Times at Aintree in 2021. Rachael’s remarkable career also saw her excel at the Cheltenham Festival, clinching 18 victories, including major races like the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Recognized as the World Sports Star at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, Rachael was hailed as the greatest female jump jockey of all time by Cheltenham racecourse. She and Brian, who have been friends for over a decade since meeting at a stable in Co Carlow, share a passion for racing but rarely discuss it at home.
Acknowledging Brian’s pivotal role in her success, Rachael expressed gratitude for his support throughout her career. The couple, often seen together at various events, enjoy a shared love for activities like Wimbledon and music festivals.
Brian, 34, has had a successful 17-year racing career, securing one victory at the esteemed Cheltenham Festival. With experience riding for renowned figures like Willie Mullins, Brian continues to make his mark in the racing world alongside his wife, Rachael Blackmore.
