“Wasteful Blunder: Kent Council Paints Closed School Road”

A recent blunder by a council under Reform leadership has drawn criticism as a wasteful and comical act. Kent County Council (KCC) employees mistakenly repainted road markings near the former Halfway Houses Primary School on the Isle of Sheppey, which closed in 2016. Independent Swale Borough councilor Mike Whiting expressed astonishment at KCC’s actions, questioning the use of resources given the school’s closure.

Whiting highlighted the irony of KCC spending on unnecessary tasks while claiming financial constraints for vital projects. The incident occurred amidst warnings from council leader Linden Kemkaran about impending tough budget decisions due to overspending. Reform, which pledged to cut down on extravagant expenditures, gained control in Kent earlier this year.

In response to the mishap, Cllr Peter Osborne, KCC’s transport cabinet member, admitted the error in repainting the lines and apologized for any confusion caused. He clarified that the cost of the error amounted to £350 from an annual budget of around £1 million designated for signs and lines maintenance, emphasizing KCC’s commitment to prudent financial management.

Despite the incident, KCC assured residents of prompt rectification of the wrongly painted markings. The local community had previously taken matters into their own hands by painting yellow lines on the road in response to frustrations over traffic issues.

Residents, such as Marleen Ditton, supported the road markings, citing the difficulty of navigating the corner when vehicles were parked there. KCC confirmed plans to address the situation by correcting the paint job and covering up the unauthorized yellow lines.
