“Vote to Lift Children Out of Poverty in Gorton and Denton”

When residents head to the voting booths in Gorton and Denton this Thursday, they hold the future of over 6,000 local children in their hands.

These youngsters are set to benefit on April 1st from the elimination of the unpopular two-child rule, with some low-income families expected to receive nearly an additional £70 per week.

Child poverty continues to affect almost half – 48% – of all children in the area, with an alarming 73% of children in Longsight growing up in impoverished conditions.

As the Labour government’s child-friendly reforms come into effect in April, a significant drop in these figures is anticipated, offering renewed hope for a brighter future. This shift is expected to better equip children for success in their academic endeavors.

With an increase in breakfast clubs and free school meals for more students, as well as the forthcoming expansion of Sure Start centers, the government’s efforts against poverty are gaining momentum, aiming to uplift children from impoverished circumstances and open up new opportunities for them.

Recently, the Reform party expressed their intention to also abolish the two-child rule, with Robert Jenrick, now their shadow chancellor, previously voting for its removal in the House of Commons. However, the party now plans to reinstate the rule, potentially plunging children back into poverty.

Contrary to Reform’s claims, the recipients of these policy changes are not solely “workless” parents. Data shows that six out of ten affected children have at least one working parent, while the remaining 40% include children who are too young, ill, or disabled, or have a parent with a disability.

With the majority of families striving to make ends meet, the narrative propagated by right-wing factions about lazy parents is unfounded and morally objectionable.

The upcoming by-election presents a crucial decision for voters: to support the ongoing efforts to lift children out of poverty with Labour’s local candidate Angeliki Stogia or revert to the austerity policies of the Conservative years.
