UK Inflation Surges to 3.4% in December

UK inflation climbed to 3.4% in December, driven mainly by increased prices for tobacco and airfare. This uptick from the 3.2% recorded in November marked the first rise in the headline rate in five months, contrary to the expectations of most economists.

Inflation is a measure of how the prices of goods and services change over time, with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) releasing monthly data on this. The ONS attributed the December increase to higher tobacco duty causing cigarette prices to rise and elevated airfare prices during the festive season.

Moreover, the ONS highlighted increased costs of certain food items like bread and cereals, partially offset by a decrease in rent and lower oil prices, which impacted raw material costs for businesses.

Grant Fitzner, the chief economist at the ONS, explained that the rise in inflation in December was influenced by higher tobacco prices due to recent excise duty hikes, as well as increased airfare costs during the holiday period. Additionally, rising food expenses, particularly for bread and cereals, contributed to the upward trend.

The Bank of England targets 2% inflation and has raised interest rates gradually over nearly two years to curb inflation and bring it back to this level. This strategy aims to reduce spending by making borrowing more expensive, thereby lowering demand and prices to mitigate inflation.

Despite the efforts to control inflation, the base rate, which was at 0.1% in December 2021, had peaked at 5.25% in August 2023 but has since been cut six times to the current level of 3.75%. Inflation had surged to 11.1% in October 2022, driven by increased energy and food costs, exacerbated by factors such as the post-Covid energy demand surge and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In September 2024, inflation hit a three-year low of 1.7% before starting to rise again in October 2024. The rise in inflation is closely monitored and calculated based on a basket of goods and services to reflect household consumption patterns.
