“Trump Renames Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America,’ Sparks Backlash”

U.S. President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” sparking mixed reactions among Americans, including some members of the House of Representatives.

Democratic representatives Tim Kennedy, Joe Morelle, and Debbie Dingell introduced the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act to reverse the renaming of Lake Ontario and prevent future changes to the names of any of the Great Lakes.

This move follows controversy stirred by Google renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps for U.S. users and reports that Trump contacted Apple to make a similar change on Apple Maps. However, MapQuest has stated that it will not alter the name.

Kennedy, who hails from Buffalo and shares a border with Canada, expressed his opposition to the name change in an interview with The Current, emphasizing the need to counteract the executive order.

He criticized Trump’s actions, describing them as distractions from more pressing issues facing the nation, such as economic challenges and strained international relations. Kennedy emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with Canada and standing up against the president’s divisive decisions.

The relationship between the U.S. and Canada holds significant historical and economic value, with deep cultural and trade connections that benefit both countries. Kennedy highlighted the intertwined nature of these ties, stressing the need to protect and strengthen the bond between the two nations.

Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, Kennedy expressed confidence that American voters will respond to Trump’s actions by voting for change and electing a new House of Representatives majority. He called for accountability and a return to order in government to address the challenges facing the nation.

As the political landscape evolves, Kennedy remains optimistic about garnering bipartisan support for the bill to reverse the Lake Ontario renaming, citing previous successful bipartisan efforts to challenge the president’s policies. He underscored the importance of restoring balance and accountability in government through the upcoming midterms.
