A teenage girl, aged 14 and weighing only 2.5 stone, was rescued from a situation characterized as a house of horrors, where her overweight family members allegedly confined her and withheld food as a form of punishment. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the girl in a severely malnourished and underweight state, with visible protruding bones resembling that of a much younger child.
The girl’s biological father, Walter Goodman, 47, claimed that the girl’s lack of appetite was the reason for her condition, stating that he avoided medical care due to distrust of a particular doctor. Goodman asserted that the girl, who he claimed was autistic, had been under his sole custody since May 2020.
The distressing situation came to light in Wisconsin on August 21 when Goodman sought help for his daughter, who had fallen ill and become comatose after days of not eating. Medical professionals diagnosed her with hepatitis, severe malnutrition, and multiple organ dysfunction, underscoring the severity of her condition.
The Outagamie County assistant district attorney, Julie DuQuaine, described the girl as emaciated, weighing merely 35lbs (2.5st), far below the average weight for a 14-year-old in the US. Reports also indicated that Walter Goodman had allegedly admitted to withholding food as a disciplinary measure, confining the girl to her room without basic amenities.
Following the rescue, the girl has been placed in the care of another family and is showing signs of improvement in her recovery journey. The adults involved, including Walter Goodman, his wife Melissa Goodman, and two others, have been charged with chronic child neglect and are currently detained on a $100,000 cash bail.
The harrowing ordeal sheds light on the importance of vigilance in recognizing and reporting instances of abuse and neglect, ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals in our communities.
