A motorist was stopped by authorities and fined for violating a rule that they were likely unaware of while driving on the M6 motorway in Warwickshire.
The surprised driver was pulled over and issued a ticket after receiving a warning from the police officers, who noted an increase in similar driving behaviors on the motorway. The individual was cited for driving too slowly at speeds between 55mph and 60mph, as well as hogging the middle lane.
Warwickshire Police labeled the driving conduct as substandard and expressed concern over the growing number of individuals driving in a similar manner without recognizing the associated risks. In a statement on Facebook, the police mentioned observing a driver on the M6 Northbound in the middle lane traveling at speeds below the standard limit without any slower-moving traffic or obstacles in the left lane.
The driver was removed from the motorway and issued a ticket for failing to demonstrate reasonable consideration for other road users, with a likelihood of being required to attend a driver improvement course at their own expense. The police highlighted the misconception that being in an overtaking lane implies driving at the speed limit, leading to unnecessary lane changes for overtaking.
While emphasizing that speed limits are not targets but limits, the police emphasized the importance of not lingering in the overtaking lane below the limit when there are no obstructions or slower-moving vehicles to the left. They warned of potential penalties, including up to 3 points on the driver’s license and a £100 fine, for not adhering to lane discipline unless overtaking or avoiding hazards.
