Stellantis is reportedly contemplating the potential closure and sale of the Brampton Assembly Plant, as communicated to Unifor, the national union. While the company has not officially notified the union of the plant’s closure, it is obligated to provide a one-year notice under their collective agreement. Stellantis has hinted at engaging in discussions with another entity regarding the plant’s potential sale.
Unifor’s national president, Lana Payne, expressed deep disappointment at the news, emphasizing the impact on the dedicated workers at the plant. Stellantis, in response, stated that they are gearing up for collective bargaining and have no immediate announcements, emphasizing their commitment to finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for the Brampton facility.
The plant’s intended retooling for Jeep Compass production, initially set to commence in January 2024 but halted in February 2025, faced a setback when the company decided to shift the production to the U.S., casting uncertainty over the plant’s future. Payne highlighted the irreplaceable nature of the high-paying union jobs established over decades in the auto sector.
Unifor plans to address this issue during upcoming contract negotiations with Stellantis, stressing the unacceptability of the situation for both the union and its members. The union is adamant about advocating for governmental policies to safeguard Canada’s auto manufacturing sector, citing the Brampton Assembly Plant’s historical significance to the community.
Vito Beato, president of Unifor Local 1285, affirmed the union’s commitment to safeguarding jobs at the Brampton plant, rejecting the notion of abandoning the workers. The union, representing around 2,200 members at the plant, assured that workers are currently receiving income security during the plant’s idle period.
City officials in Brampton, along with federal representatives, are actively engaged in discussions to support the plant’s workforce and maintain automotive production in Brampton. The city has taken proactive steps to ensure the land is zoned for automotive production, underscoring the importance of finding a resolution that secures jobs and sustains long-term investment in the region.
