“Syrians Demand Justice for Mohammad Ghamira’s Tragic Death”

Syrians rallied this week to demand justice following the tragic demise of Mohammad Ghamira, a Syrian man who passed away in a hospital after purported mistreatment by security forces while in custody. This incident occurred less than two years after the new government had pledged to depart from the prevalent arbitrary detentions and abuse under the previous regime.

Ghamira’s family informed authorities that the 29-year-old, a father of two, had hemophilia, a genetic condition hindering blood clotting. He was kept in detention for three days, released on August 9, and promptly hospitalized, succumbing to his condition a week later.

The passing of Ghamira is seen as a crucial test for Syria’s new leadership in implementing accountability measures post the downfall of the longstanding Assad rule. His death triggered peaceful demonstrations and sit-ins across the nation, shedding light on numerous reports of alleged mistreatment at detention facilities under the current administration.

According to Fadel Abdulghany, the executive director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), Ghamira’s case underscores longstanding concerns regarding unregulated detention practices amidst the country’s transition towards a more equitable judicial system.

Ghamira, a former volunteer with the White Helmets, a renowned rescue group, was detained over an alleged theft accusation, as per the Latakia Internal Security Command. Despite his family’s warnings about his medical condition, Ghamira reportedly faced physical abuse while in custody.

Following his release, Ghamira passed away at Latakia University Hospital. The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management mourned his death, affirming a commitment to justice and the rule of law in the “new Syria.”

An internal investigation into Ghamira’s demise revealed that a police interrogator had physically assaulted him during questioning, leading to fatal complications. The interrogator is set to face legal consequences, with disciplinary actions ongoing against other implicated personnel.

While the government assures accountability in Ghamira’s case, advocacy groups emphasize the persistence of abuses in detention centers, calling for systemic reforms to prevent future violations and enhance oversight mechanisms.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities endured by many Syrians during the previous regime’s oppressive rule, highlighting the ongoing challenges in fostering a more just and humane society in Syria’s transitional phase.
