Premier League football fans, likely still recovering from festive feasting, will experience a different Boxing Day this year. Only one game is scheduled on December 26, with the rest of the matches moved to the following weekend. Traditionally, Boxing Day fixtures have been a staple of the football calendar but due to contractual obligations, the Premier League had to make this adjustment.

The league is mandated to have 33 rounds of weekend matches and five midweek fixtures. As a consequence, the league will not have the usual lineup on Boxing Day, as reported by The Times. With various weekends already allocated throughout the year, including FA Cup matches, the league had to utilize December 27 and 28 to fulfill its commitments.

Notable matchups such as West Ham vs Fulham, Crystal Palace vs Tottenham, and Manchester United vs Newcastle will now be part of the rescheduled fixtures. This year will see the fewest top-flight games played on Boxing Day since World War II, contrasting with the 2024 season when eight matches were held.

In 2014, when Boxing Day fell on a Friday, all ten Premier League games were played on the day. Fixture dates and times for this year are yet to be finalized, with clubs and broadcasters usually informed at least six weeks in advance. The English Football League and National League sides are expected to have a full slate of fixtures, with games scheduled for Monday, December 29.

While other leagues resume matches on December 30 following the weekend, the Premier League will have a brief break before restarting. Normalcy is expected to return in 2026 when Boxing Day falls on a weekend.
