A convict evaded capture after being mistakenly freed from prison due to a clerical error that led to a mix-up in his sentencing details. William Smith, also known as Billy, received a 45-month sentence for various fraud offenses at Croydon Crown Court. However, he was erroneously released when a different sentence was entered into the system under his name. Authorities are now in pursuit of him to return him to custody.
Smith was tried alongside another individual, Joseph Smith, as indicated in court records. While Joseph Smith, who was out on bail and physically present in court, received a suspended sentence and was allowed to go free, Billy, who was in custody at HMP Wandsworth and appeared via video link, was handed a custodial sentence.
The mistake occurred when the sentences were incorrectly logged into the digital system, resulting in Billy being wrongly assigned a suspended sentence. This error triggered his release process.
Efforts were made to rectify the error earlier on the same day, but a subsequent blunder led to the wrong person being informed about the mistake. Consequently, Billy was released in error before the situation could be corrected.
Surrey Police issued an appeal to locate Billy Smith, aged 35, who was mistakenly released. He was last seen wearing a navy long-sleeve jumper with a white Nike logo, navy blue tracksuit bottoms with a white Nike logo on the left pocket, and black trainers. Although he has ties to Woking, he could be anywhere in Surrey.
Coincidentally, another individual, Algerian national Brahim Kaddour Cherif, was also mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth, prompting urgent search efforts by the authorities.
