The Ministry of Justice faces a crisis following the accidental release of two prisoners from the same facility within days. Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a registered sex offender, and fraudster William Smith were both mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth. The Metropolitan Police was informed six days after Kaddour-Cherif’s release and a mix-up in court records led to Smith’s release on Monday.
Manhunts have been launched for both individuals, adding to the recent release mishap of paedophile Hadush Kebatu from HMP Chelmsford. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, standing in for Keir Starmer at PMQs, expressed outrage over the incidents, citing systemic flaws in the criminal justice system.
Kaddour-Cherif, an Algerian national, was in the process of deportation when he vanished. His history includes legal entry in 2019, overstaying, and involvement in criminal activities. The police were belatedly notified of his release, and subsequent incidents involving indecent exposure and theft followed.
Smith, sentenced to 45 months for fraud, was released due to a clerical error confusing him with his co-defendant. Despite attempts to rectify the mistake, Smith was released prematurely. Surrey Police indicated Smith’s potential whereabouts while the fallout from these releases continues to unfold, prompting criticism and calls for accountability from various officials.
