The Kremlin has rejected claims from U.S. media that Russia might launch an attack on a NATO member state and that CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s recent visit to Moscow was intended to caution against such actions. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, dismissed the reports as sensationalized and not reflective of Russia’s actual intentions.
Peskov mentioned that Ratcliffe did not meet with President Vladimir Putin during the visit, although Putin was informed about it. The Wall Street Journal initially reported that Ratcliffe had conveyed a message warning Russia against any potential aggression towards a NATO member state. This information was based on insights from sources briefed on the visit.
Sergey Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s SVR foreign intelligence service, disclosed that he had a “working-level meeting” with Ratcliffe, discussing undisclosed sensitive matters within their intelligence service domains. Naryshkin emphasized that such meetings were routine.
President Trump characterized Ratcliffe’s visit as “semi-routine,” with the last known CIA director visit occurring before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, involving Ratcliffe’s predecessor, William Burns, meeting with Putin in November 2021. NATO has not officially commented on Ratcliffe’s visit, and the European Union confirmed no prior knowledge of the visit.
Recent reports indicated heightened security measures in Russia’s northern NATO neighbors, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland, amid concerns of potential “false flag” attacks using Ukrainian drones orchestrated by Moscow. Moscow refuted these reports as part of Western “scare stories” driven by “Russophobia.”
The presence of mysterious drones in Europe has raised suspicions, with a recent incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany involving a drone carrying explosives. The airport serves as both a civilian and NATO transportation hub. German authorities labeled the incident a hybrid attack, without attributing responsibility. Russia denied accusations by German officials and media linking it to the drone incident.
