A courageous individual who intervened to protect passengers from a train attacker described his actions as simply doing what anyone else would do. Stephen Crean, hailed as a hero for his brave response during a violent stabbing incident on a train bound for Huntingdon station, remains modest, stating he is just an ordinary person. The Nottingham Forest supporter had been returning from a football match between Forest and Manchester United when the harrowing event took place on an LNER service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross.
As chaos erupted with passengers fleeing and warning of a knife-wielding assailant, Stephen found himself face to face with the attacker after unsuccessful attempts to seek refuge in crowded areas of the train. Recalling the tense moment, Stephen shared that the perpetrator threatened him repeatedly with the blade, leading to a confrontation between the two.
In a bold move, Stephen managed to grab the knife, sustaining severe injuries to his hands in the process. Subsequently, he sought refuge in an empty train restroom to tend to his wounds while the train was rerouted to Huntingdon station. Despite his injuries, Stephen’s quick thinking helped to thwart the attacker and protect others on board.
Following the incident, Stephen received medical attention for his injuries, including stitches for his wounds. He is currently recuperating in a local hospital, with plans to have his bandages removed by the end of the week. Despite the ordeal, Stephen remains humble, downplaying his heroic actions and emphasizing that there are others more deserving of recognition.
Nottingham Forest’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, has offered to cover medical expenses for affected fans, including Stephen, who declined the gesture, believing others may require the support more urgently. Although he will miss upcoming matches due to his recovery, Stephen remains committed to supporting his team and attending future games once he has healed.
The attacker, Anthony Williams from Peterborough, has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder and possession of a bladed weapon. Following the attack, eleven individuals were hospitalized, with two still in critical condition, while the others have been discharged.
As Stephen looks forward to his recovery and returning to his usual routine, he remains steadfast in his support for Nottingham Forest, expressing his determination to continue attending matches despite the recent traumatic events.
