In two Canadian provinces, there are ongoing discussions about the possibility of leaving the country permanently, with distinct age groups leading the charge.
In Quebec, the forefront of the independence movement includes individuals who were not even born during the province’s last separation referendum in 1995. A pro-independence group organized a large event earlier this summer, coinciding with Fête nationale, which attracted around 12,000 attendees, predominantly from the Gen Z demographic.
Conversely, in Alberta, the demographic driving the separation movement tends to be slightly older. According to John Santos, a data scientist at Janet Brown Opinion Research, middle-aged individuals show the highest support for separation.
Recent surveys conducted by polling companies indicate that support for Alberta independence is highest among individuals aged 45 to 54, at 35%, while disapproval is most significant among 18- to 24-year-olds, with 81% against separatism.
Although younger Albertans show lower support for separation in surveys, there is potential for more to be swayed, as many are just starting to engage with civic and political concepts, according to Santos.
In Quebec, the youth-driven push for sovereignty is evident in the activities of groups like OUI Québec, led by individuals like Camille Goyette-Gingras. The younger generation in Quebec is motivated by concerns about their future, the environment, and the preservation of culture and language.
While young Quebecers have become prominent figures in the sovereignty movement, recent polling suggests that support for independence is relatively consistent across different age groups. A Leger poll reported 31% support among 18-34-year-olds, compared to 32% and 29% among those aged 35-54 and 55-plus, respectively.
Despite the visible support for independence among younger individuals, a Quebec referendum is not imminent. Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon stated that a sovereignty referendum would not be pursued while U.S. President Donald Trump remains in office if he wins the upcoming provincial election.
In Alberta, younger voices like Madison and MayCee Holmes advocate for a sovereign Alberta through their podcast, Home with Holmes. They aim to encourage informed discussions and critical thinking among their peers, emphasizing the importance of understanding the implications of separation.
As the referendum approaches on October 19, the engagement of young voters is crucial, as their turnout could significantly impact the outcome. Organizations like Apathy is Boring are working to raise awareness and encourage youth participation in the democratic process.
