A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake has resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals and left approximately 300 others wounded in Afghanistan.
The seismic event occurred at 12:59 am local time, approximately 14 miles west-southwest of Khulm. The US Geological Survey has issued a warning indicating the likelihood of significant casualties and widespread devastation following the tremor, which originated at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles).
Sharafat Zaman, a representative from the Ministry of Public Health, confirmed the death toll at 20, with 320 individuals sustaining injuries. Most of the injured individuals had minor wounds and were discharged from medical facilities after receiving treatment.
Rescue operations have been initiated in areas affected by the earthquake, particularly in Balkh and Samangan provinces, where substantial damage is reported. Emergency response teams are assisting the injured in relocating, while affected households are receiving essential aid.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Taliban government, stated that the earthquake impacted the Balkh, Samangan, and Baghlan regions. Relief crews have been dispatched by the government to offer assistance to those in need.
Among the structures damaged is Afghanistan’s renowned Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif. Video footage circulating online shows sections of the mosque’s walls collapsing, while the main structure remains intact.
The Defense Ministry of Afghanistan reported a rockslide on a mountain highway connecting Kabul to Mazar-e-Sharif, temporarily blocking the route. However, the road was cleared later, and individuals trapped along the highway due to injuries were transported to hospitals.
This catastrophe follows closely after a recent devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan. Immediate aid was provided by UN teams on the ground, pledging support to the affected communities during this challenging time.
