Emma Sheppard, a 42-year-old woman from the West Midlands, has undergone 35 surgeries over the past 28 years. Her medical journey began at the age of 10 when she experienced severe stomach pain. Initially dismissed as psychological, further tests revealed she had interstitial cystitis, leading to a series of surgeries including the removal of her bladder, uterus, cervix, colon, and bowel.
Emma expressed the toll these surgeries have taken on her, both physically and emotionally, impacting her mood and self-perception. Despite initial relief after some procedures, her symptoms persisted, requiring more surgeries, including the recent removal of her rectum on October 7.
Throughout her medical history, Emma faced unexplained stomach pains and urinary issues, eventually being diagnosed with interstitial cystitis at 23. Despite complications and challenging decisions, she underwent multiple surgeries to address her condition, including the removal of her neobladder.
Despite facing additional health challenges like chronic constipation and bowel issues, Emma remains hopeful that her recent rectum removal surgery might mark the end of her medical ordeal. She aims to inspire others to embrace their medical devices and disabilities, emphasizing that they should not hinder one’s ability to pursue their dreams.
Emma’s long list of surgeries includes procedures like tonsillectomy, appendicectomy, cystoscopies, hysterectomy, neobladder construction, and various other operations to address her complex medical needs.
