Shoe repair chain Timpson has introduced a new service for trading in mobile phones. Partnering with gadget resell firm musicMagpie and AO, Timpson now allows customers to swiftly exchange their unwanted handsets for cash at any of its 1,300 stores across the UK. Recent research indicates that a significant number of UK adults possess unused smartphones at home, with an average trade-in value of approximately £250, totaling an estimated £10 billion. Although online resell options are abundant, Timpson aims to cater to individuals who prefer face-to-face transactions. The survey revealed that a majority of people prefer in-person trade-ins, with immediate payment being a crucial factor for many. The trade-in service, initially trialed by Timpson and musicMagpie four months ago, is now widely available at Timpson stores nationwide. John Roberts, CEO of AO World, emphasized the convenience of this service, highlighting the ease of receiving quick cash for old smartphones at Timpson locations. The collaboration between musicMagpie and Timpson aims to provide customers with instant value for their old tech, contributing to affordability and sustainability. Steve Oliver, co-founder of musicMagpie, expressed enthusiasm over the extended reach and convenience achieved by partnering with Timpson. Sid Hubbard, Timpson’s group director, highlighted the company’s longstanding commitment to repairing goods and expressed satisfaction in expanding this service to include smartphone trade-ins in collaboration with musicMagpie.
